For months, rumours have been swirling around the casting of the upcoming New Mutants movie, a spin-off of Fox’s X-Men movie franchise. It was more or less an open secret, but it’s great to finally have confirmation that actresses Anya Taylor-Joy (The WitchSplit) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) have been cast!

Taylor-Joy was last seen in the M Night Shyamalan hit Split (see our review), and will play Magik, a mutant blessed with the powers of sorcery. Fans may also know her as Ilyana Rasputin, aka the little sister of Colossus.

Meanwhile, GOT fan favourite Maisie Williams will be playing Rahne Sinclair aka Wolfsbane, who has the power to turn herself into a wolf at will. (Yeah, I know. Arya Stark’s direwolf warging powers have finally fully manifested!)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox is apparently making a real effort to find “ethnically appropriate actors”, which means finding a Native American actress to play Dani Moonstar and a Brazilian actor to play Sunspot. It’s worth pointing out that we already saw one version of Sunspot in X-Men: Days of Future Past (see our review), played by actor Adan Canto, but I wouldn’t put it past Fox to recast the character.

However, there’s still no word on whether or not James McAvoy will be reprising his role as Professor X, or if anyone else from the First Class cast for that matter. Sigh.

New Mutants will be directed by Josh Boone and is slated to start shooting in Montreal this July, with a projected release date of April 13, 2018.
