The Logan trailer may have shown us just how awesome the movie can be, but getting the movie made the way director James Mangold and star Hugh Jackman wanted meant taking a long, hard road.

The duo wanted to make the movie a full Western, complete with sweeping landscapes and lots of contemplation. 20th Century Fox Film chairman Stacey Snider told Variety that this made some studio execs very nervous:

“Inside, there was real consternation about the intensity of the tone of the film. It’s more of an elegy about life and death. The paradigm for it was a Western, and my colleagues were up in arms. It’s not a wise-cracking cigar-chomping mutton-sporting Wolverine, and the debate internally became, isn’t that freakin’ boring? Isn’t it exciting to imagine Wolverine as a real guy and he’s world-weary and he doesn’t want to fight anymore until a little girl needs him?”

Make a movie more faithful to the tone of the comics, as opposed to the usual hero-saves-the-world scenario? Perish the thought! Fortunately for all us, the commercial success of Deadpool (see our review) paved the way for Logan and a hard ‘R’ rating.

Meanwhile, Fox has released a new found footage marketing video that sheds a little more light on how Laura (Dafne Keen) got her claws. Here’s a hint: It involves scientists, a prison, secret experiments and loooots of blood.

The Logan Singapore release date has been set for March 2.

  • If they’re nervous, it probably means it’d be good.

  • Fox executives are boring.

  • Whatever Fox. Stop the intervention.

  • Fear leads to the dark side, Fox execs.
