First it was The Crown‘s Vanessa Kirby, now another British actor is joining the Mission: Impossible franchise. Superman himself, Henry Cavill, has signed on for the sixth installment of the Tom Cruise action vehicle.

The story was broken by Variety, who reported that “Cavill would play some sort of a right hand to the head of Cruise’s unit”, the Impossible Missions Force. Given Cavill’s profile, it’s unlikely that he’ll have signed up for a some bit part. Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, and Jeremy Renner are also expected to return.

Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation director Christopher McQuarrie, who is also back as director for MI6, had an amusing exchange with Cavill on Instagram about his forthcoming role:

Say, @henrycavill. Had a thought. Curious if you're interested in a role in the 6th installment of Mission: Impossible. No pressure.

It’s an interesting casting choice, considering a) Cavill’s commitments to the DCEU and b) the Cruiser turns 55 this year. The MI franchise is now into its 21st year and still going strong, but still very much centred on Cruise’s charisma and derring-do.
Meanwhile, Cavill’s turn as Superman has been somewhat meh, and he won’t have been encouraged by the very negative response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He’s also only 33 – the same age Cruise was when he first took on the role of Ethan Hunt. Hmmmmmmm.
Renner, now 46, was previously touted as a successor to Cruise but his star has faded somewhat. Cavill is a fine actor and leading man – check out his turn and flawless American accent in The Man From U.N.C.L.E – but has yet to land a big role that really enables him to shine. For our money, he would be a great contender to succeed Cruise.
But in all probability, Cavill is simply hedging his bets in case the Superman gig goes south. Which you just know it will in time.

  • That’s the question we asked when Jeremy Renner joined the franchise hahaha 😀

    • Renner a bit old liao. Cavill still fit and young.
