Rejoice, geeks, because James Gunn is returning for the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie! And the sequel hasn’t even opened yet!
While Anthony and Joe Russo are currently working on the shoot for their third MCU movie Avengers: Infinity War, this means that Gunn will be the first Marvel director to oversee the entire run of one of the individual movie trilogies that the MCU is so fond of.
Gunn has said in previous interviews that he wasn’t sure if he would continue in the franchise, but he recently took to Facebook to announce that he will write and direct the third GotG movie. Obviously, Gunn’s only just getting started with press for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but it’s nice to know that he’s already put in some thought about where to take the franchise:
“Much of what’s happened in the MCU for the past ten or so years has been leading, in a big way, to the Avengers’ Infinity War. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen after all that. It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond. I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far.”
I don’t know about you, but that’s got me all excited. Here’s his (rather lengthy) post in full if you’re interested:
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 opens in Singapore on April 27. And if you’ve got time, go and get tickets for the Guardians movie marathon next week!
