It’s the movie we’ve been anticipating for a while now, led by a powerhouse cast of geek actors. And now we have our first look at The Current War trailer, which might well be subtitled Sherlock v Zod.

To refresh your memories, it’s the real-life story of the 19th century rivalry between famed inventors and electricity pioneers Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon).

A titanic battle that came to be called the War of Currents, it involved competing electric power transmission systems based on Edison’s direct current and Westinghouse’s alternating current. And then a certain Serbian-American genius named Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult) came into the mix…

The period design looks gorgeous, while Shannon is quietly, quietly intense. Unfortunately, Cumberbatch’s American accent is still grating and unconvincing. He also seems to be playing the same socially maladjusted, misunderstood genius he’s played time and again.

We at Geek Crusade do love Benny so. But after Sherlock, The Imitation Game, Doctor Strange et al, how long before he gets labelled a one-trick pony?
