In the latest IT trailer, we finally hear the evil clown Pennywise speak. Watch below:
It’s ok. We didn’t intend to sleep tonight anyway.
Based on the bestselling novel by Stephen King, IT follows the adventures of a group of kids in the small town of Derry, Maine. Amid the mysterious disapperance of several children, six friends are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back centuries.
This time, Bill Skarsgard takes on the iconic role of Pennywise, who was played by Tim Curry in the 1990 adaptation of IT. As much as I appreciate the sinister atmosphere of this remake, I’m not entirely sure of this interpretation of Pennywise the Clown, at least as far as the It trailer goes.
What made Curry’s portrayal of Pennywise special was the initial subtlety of the character. His Pennywise came across, at first, as the weird, washed-out “kids’ party” clown that may or may not be a druggie or pedophile that your mom warned you about. Whereas Skarsgard’s version is clearly supernatural from the get go and doesn’t leave much for a build up.
Speaking of Curry, eagle eyed fans spotted the 1990 Pennywise in this trailer.
