If you were wondering where The Walking Dead‘s Josh McDermitt a.k.a. Eugene Porter disappeared to after Negan kidnapped him, it turns out he was busy hanging out in our little red dot.
McDermitt found some time to drop by Singapore during the Asian press tour for the second half of The Walking Dead Season 7, and Geek Crusade had the privilege of co-hosting a fan meet-and-greet with more than 60 lucky fans who were eager to meet the bullet maker himself.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived at Fox Asia’s offices in Fusionopolis on Thursday (Feb 16), but I was pretty surprised to see that they had laid out a full dinner buffet for us. This included some seriously cool Walking Dead cupcakes that had everyone ooh-ing and aah-ing once they’d caught sight of them.
Once I’d snagged a seat and got fed and watered, it soon became clear that there were a lot of excited fans in the room. I was surrounded by groups of fans who were all getting to know each other and chatting about their favourite characters and scenes from the show. Above all else, they were wondering about Eugene’s fate and Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) character arc.
Many of them were caught up in posing for pictures with props that Fox Asia helpfully provided, resulting in some seriously hilarious photo ops. That’s one thing I’ve come to realise about any Walking Dead event. It’s the one place where fake bloodied limbs and heads are par for the course.
When McDermitt finally arrived, he was greeted by enthusiastic applause and much whooping before settling down for a panel and Q&A, hosted by our Head Geek himself, Nicholas Yong (who has incidentally also written a zombie novel set in Singapore #shamelessplug).
His energy levels were impressive for someone who’s spent a week on the road, including time in Japan and Taiwan. In the latter, he appeared on a variety show where the hosts subjected him to eating some very strange food. Don’t ask. Fortunately, Fox Asia didn’t subject him to any of that in Singapore.
I’ve been to many celebrity events like this one, and I was pleasantly surprised to see so many hardcore fans turning up to meet McDermitt on a weeknight. McDermitt in person was a little taller than expected, but that famous mullet was out in full force.
In fact, the mullet itself was subject to a lot of attention. McDermitt revealed that one of the most common questions he gets asked is if the mullet is real or if they’re hair extensions (spoiler: they’re real!). The other question he gets asked all the time is which character will get killed in the latest season, and he admitted that he likes to have fun with the fans by saying “Daryl”. After which, as Nicholas suggested, a riot ensues.
Other highlights included a discussion of favourite zombie movies, the hardest scene he’s had to shoot, and a hilarious extended dialogue about the infamous crotch-biting scene that almost took out McDermitt’s teeth during the shoot. As he says, “Every time you have to bite someone’s crotch, it’s hard!”

After that, Josh McDermitt graciously posed for selfies and doled out autographs to a long (but patient) line of fans. In fact, I was impressed that he was taking the time to have a short conversation with everyone present despite the fact that he’d been jetlagged since flying into Singapore.
McDermitt is a very funny man indeed. He even had multiple expressions at the ready when I asked him for a selfie.

Had a great time hanging out with the @geekcrusade gang at the fan meet with @joshmcdermitt last night! I also had the privilege of meeting one of the coolest, chillest and all-around nice guys without having walkers interrupt. Though my selfie game is still not the greatest! #twdonfox #meeteugenesg #thewalkingdead
To all who joined us for the event, thanks very much and we hope you had a blast!
