Chris Evans is Captain America

“Team Cap is toast,” said Robert Downey Jr at the Eiffel Tower in Paris just three days ago. Well, we’ll see about that.

Yesterday (Apr 20), Chris Evans (Captain America), Anthony Mackie (The Falcon), Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier) and co-director Joe Russo held a press conference at Marina Bay Sands. It was the start of a series of activities that will culminate in Captain America’s ‘claim’ of one of Singapore’s iconic landmarks.

Geek Crusade was there to witness proceedings. And did Team Cap own Team Iron Man? Yes, they did.

It’s been said many times: Robert Downey Jr. IS Tony Stark, but it’s exactly the same for Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. Even his approach to acting harkens to the same values that Rogers embodies:

“The action is exhausting and physically demanding but what I think is harder to approach as an actor are the emotional scenes. There is much more personal responsibility in those scenes.”

Mackie is one funny guy, and he lobbed a few choice shots at Team Iron Man. When tasked to come up with nicknames for them, he came up with this:

  • Ironman: Coca Cola Can
  • Black Widow: Perfect
  • Iron Patriot: Trash Can
  • Vision: Magic Marker
  • Black Panther: Michelin Car Tyre

3Team Cap is down to earth

Mackie also dished the dirt out on how the members of Team Cap are the salt of the earth, as opposed to the lavish lifestyle of Team Iron Man.

“We try to get to know the culture that we’re in and eat the food and meet the people. Whereas #TeamIronman just go in to get pampered. They go from the press conference to the spa. From the spa to their jets. We are about mingling. It is more about learning the stuff about the people, you know like stingray and chili crab. Learning things like “yes lah” or “No lah”.

The panel was asked to choose their favourite onscreen hero or villain. While Mackie threw out names like Michael Keaton as Batman and Evans chose Michael Biehn in The Abyss (“Michael Biehn in anything!”), it was Stan’s choice of Gary Oldman from Leon: The Professional that earned him this writer’s geek seal of approval.

5You have a theater? We have a shopping mall!

While it’s cute that the Parisians provided a quaint little theatre as their venue for the Civil War premiere, Team Cap managed to completely upstage them by holding it in a shopping mall with exhibition halls and a full theater too. Even though the event was on the ground floor, Mackie and Russo went up to the higher floors to meet and greet the fans who weren’t able to be at ground zero. Major props for that guys!

This is just the beginning of the ultimate take down of Team Ironman. Don’t forget to check out the takeover of Marina Bay Sands by Team Cap tonight, complete with a huge fireworks display. Eat your own toast, Tony.
