It’s been a very busy  week  for Marvel Studios, but amidst all the excitement for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes even more juicy backstory for the agency known as SHIELD.

Agent Carter has added two more actors to round out its cast, with one of them playing a pivotal role in the mythos of the MCU. Lyndsy Fonseca, perhaps best known for her roles in Nikita (2010-2013)  and Kick-Ass (2010) , joins the cast as Angie Martinelli, aspiring actress and Peggy Carter’s (Hayley Atwell) friend.

More exciting though, is the news that they’ve cast British actor James D’Arcy from Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) as the Starks’ loyal butler Edwin Jarvis.

Oh yeah, I’d love to have Jarvis at my beck and call. Source: Empire Online

Having Jarvis in Agent Carter basically guarantees that we’ll see more of Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) hanging around the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR). Marvel Studios has also released a synopsis for the eight-part miniseries that elaborates more on what Peggy Carter gets up to after the war.

When old acquaintance Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper, Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”) finds himself being framed for unleashing his deadliest weapons to anyone willing to pony up the cash, he contacts Peggy – the only person he can trust – to track down those responsible, dispose of the weapons and clear his name. He empowers his butler, Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy, “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”), to be at her beck and call when needed to help assist her as she investigates and tracks down those responsible for releasing these weapons of mass destruction. But Jarvis, who is a creature of habit and sticks to a rigid daily routine, is going to have to make some major life changes if he’s going to be able to keep up with Peggy.

If caught going on these secret missions for Stark, Peggy could be targeted as a traitor and spend the rest of her days in prison – or worse. And as she delves deeper into her investigation, she may find that those she works for are not who they seem, and she might even begin to question whether Stark is as innocent as he claims.

As we reported before, Chad Michael Murray and Enver Gjokaj have already been cast as Peggy’s fellow agents, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo directing a couple of episodes.

ABC has also released Agent Carter‘s very first TV spot that has a brief, tantalising first glimpse of the tall and poised D’Arcy as Jarvis.

This buildup has got me even more excited now! I’ve always wanted to know more about SHIELD and how Hydra managed to infiltrate its ranks, and it looks like Agent Carter may have some answers for that.

Plus, more Howard Stark is always good, I’ve always thought that his part in the first Captain America movie was way too small. And judging from Hayley Atwell’s twitter account, we’re also going to see Peggy kick some major butt.

I’m also keen to see if any of this backstory is going to play into some of the future MCU movies. If there one thing Marvel does well, it’s the linking of all its franchises to make one cohesive universe, and rarely do they ever put in something that won’t have significance later on.

Agent Carter is slated for release in January on ABC while Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD goes on mid-season hiatus.
