Given that the Caped Crusader’s origin story had already been retold in Batman Begins (2005), we weren’t expecting Bruce Wayne’s parents to figure on the big screen again. But Lauren Cohan, a.k.a. The Walking Dead‘s Maggie, has been cast as Martha Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice!

It’s unclear just how much the origin story will figure in BvS, or if the Waynes are only appearing in flashback, but Entertainment Weekly reported that Cohan’s role will be a small one. Zombies are also unlikely to feature.

As if you needed reminding – in the comics, Martha Wayne was first portrayed as an heiress married to Dr Thomas Wayne. They’re both murdered by a petty thief named Joe Chill in the presence of their young son Bruce, and the trauma eventually leads Bruce to take on the mantle of Batman.

Fittingly, given the trauma that gave birth to the Dark Knight, Ben Affleck has said that his character is out for blood.

“He’s on the verge of being swallowed up by the anger and the rage that we see haunt this character in the other manifestations of it. But this guy is further down the line and has become more embittered and cynical.”

Given the darkly dark tone of the movie, I would love to see the producers adapting that sequence with Bruce and his parents in Batman: Death and the Maidens.

Batman is given a potion by Ra’s al Ghul, which he claims will enable him to speak to his parents in the afterlife. He drinks it, and has an extended conversation with them where they encourage him to let go of the demons of the past.
