The casting choices for Batman v Superman just keep getting more and more left field – Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly being considered to play the villain in the Man of Steel sequel, and it may just be a certain rich, bald scientific genius…
Variety cited sources saying that Warner Bros wants the Oscar-nominated actor for a role in the upcoming movie, believed to be that of Superman’s bete noir Lex Luthor. But it’s early days yet, and it’s unclear that Phoenix would accept any offer, as he has steered clear of big-budget projects in the past few years.
Both Warner Bros and the actor’s reps had no comment. Other actors like Game of Thrones‘ Jason Momoa have also been linked with the movie, though for different roles.
Phoenix is currently getting critical acclaim for his role in Her, and has played villains in the past, most notably the exceedingly creepy Commodus in Gladiator (2000). For my money, he would certainly bring a very interesting take to the role if cast.
Batman Vs Superman – the presumed title for the as yet unnamed movie – opens July 17, 2015.
