Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock

We know, we know. It’s way too long before the next Sherlock episode airs again.

And it looks like we aren’t the only ones who miss seeing our favourite Internet boyfriend play an intelligent, arrogant, articulate genius.

According to Tracking Board, Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play American inventor Thomas Edison (Another genius role? Shock! Horror!) in The Current War, which details the rivalry between Edison and fellow inventor George Westinghouse in a series of events known as the “War of Currents”.

The script is penned by Michael Mitnick (The Giver), and was previously featured on the Hit List. For those playing along, the Hit List is a list of the year’s most promising scripts currently being shopped around Hollywood in hopes of getting optioned.

It’s reported that The Weinstein Company is set to produce the film, which is fitting given that they are also the ones behind the last Cumberbatch film, The Imitation Game (2014). Details on the project are scant and no director has been attached to it yet, so we’re firmly in Rumourville right now.

It would be interesting to see a cinematic version of the War of Currents, aka AC vs DC. Westinghouse and his company hired Nikola Tesla for a brief period of time, so it’d be interesting to see who they eventually cast as Tesla. (Please be Hiddleston, please be Hiddleston…)

Clearly, someone had a light bulb moment and decided that Actor of the Moment Cumberbatch needed to play another genius role. I can’t even pretend to be surprised by news like this anymore.

It’s beginning to turn into a meme on its own. At this point I’m almost expecting them to announce that Martin Freeman will be cast as Alexander Graham Bell.

In the meantime, curly-haired Cumberbatch has a lot on his plate. He’s just finished filming the Sherlock Victorian special and will be seen next as Johnny Depp’s brother in Black Mass.

He’s also set to start filming for Doctor Strange and the live-action The Jungle Book later this year, not to mention playing Hamlet in the West End.

Oh, and he’s got a new baby on the way too. Honestly, where does he find the time?
