Attention, Game of Thrones fans: The wait is over. Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) has set foot on our sunny shores!
Geek Crusade was there yesterday (Apr 2) at HBO Asia’s Worlds of Westeros event, held at Basement 4 of ION Orchard. I knew that a lot of people were going to turn up at the event, but I sure wasn’t prepared for the horde of passionate fans that turned up to welcome Bran Stark! By my estimate, a couple of hundred fans were there, filling up almost the entirety of the atrium.
The crowd control at Ion was really less than ideal: People kept slipping under the barriers and sneaking in and security were very quickly overwhelmed. It got very claustrophobic, very quickly.
To make matters worse, the emcee kept calling the Iron Throne “the Game of Thrones”. Once would’ve been okay, we all slip up sometimes. But he called it “the Game of Thrones” multiple times throughout the entire event. Seriously?!
But back to our main man. Hempstead Wright had just flown in that morning, but showed nary a sign of jet lag as he took in the sight of hundreds of fans that had gathered to catch a glimpse of Bran.
As he’d never been to Singapore before, he was keen on seeing some of the sights, and revealed that he had a long list of foods that he wanted to try while he was in town. The emcee even got the crowd to celebrate his 17th birthday a week early.
He also gamely posed for selfies and signed pictures for the lucky fans who had won meet-and-greet passes.
Hempstead Wright also got the chance to try out the Game of Thrones: Ascend the Wall virtual reality experience, a 4D immersive experience powered by Oculus Rift.
I tried it for myself, and can report that the experience is super, super cool! It took a bit of getting used to and the graphics are still a tad pixelated, but it really does open up all sorts of possibilities. Just imagine being able to explore Dorne, King’s Landing and Meereen without leaving the building!
There’s also a display of artist Will Simpson original storyboard art from key scenes in Season 5, as well an impressive display of weapons made by Tommy Dunne, including Arya Stark’s Needle, Ned Stark’s Ice and Brienne of Tarth’s Oathkeeper.
Here’s a wider shot of the set up:
There’s also opportunities to have your picture taken with the Iron Throne, and with the magic of green screen, you can even encounter the fearsome Drogon!
Follow our continued coverage of Bran Stark’s visit to Singapore, as Geek Crusade meets Isaac Hempstead Wright for a little chat on Tuesday. Hopefully, no three-eyed crows will be present.
The Worlds of Westeros event will run until Thursday, April 7 at ION, Basement 4, from 10am to 10pm.
