The World’s End opens here in two weeks, so it’s time to bring you our special report from the movie’s panel at Comic Con, which we attended back in July in the packed, dark confines of Hall H. And while it may not have had the star power of the Marvel or Fox panels, it was certainly one of the most entertaining.

The World’s End is the story of five friends who reunite after 20 years to re-create a pub crawl, only to stumble upon an alien invasion. The third of the so-called Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, after Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007), it reunites the dynamic trio of director Edgar Wright, and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Since opening in the US on August 23, it’s gotten rave reviews and has made more than US$16 million, off a US$20 million budget.

This is probably Wright’s last project before he goes all superstarry with Ant-man, but he, Pegg and Frost clearly share a very special chemistry. When asked by moderator Chris Hardwick about the apparent Doctor Who element in the movie, Wright responded: “If you’ve ever watched Doctor Who and thought it would be funnier if the Doctor was really hammered, then this is the movie for you.” Pegg added: “Our TARDIS in this is beer.”

You’ve all heard the old cliche about how something was “a laugh a minute”, but this really did apply. The self-deprecating humour was there right from the get go, with requests from Wright like: “When talking about The World’s End on Twitter later, please use the hash tag #lofty.” And when Frost expressed his pleasure at being able to play “this angry, bummed out hard nut,” his partners in crime immediately revealed  his action nickname – The Pink Hulk.

Asked what it was like to work with Wright and Frost again after a six year hiatus and numerous other projects, Pegg replied: “It’s like having a brief love affair, and then you come back to your marriage, and it makes it so much stronger.” He also revealed that he broke his hand while filming a scene, but still did six more takes as the shot was not done: “Which just shows you how much I love Edgar.”

But there was still time for some serious comments from Wright, who was asked for advice for aspiring directors: “We got to make ourselves laugh first, and then have others appreciate it. Write something that you’re passionate about. Whatever you write, try and draw on something that means something to you.”
