There’s clearly a market for geek events in Singapore, given the enthusiastic response to events like the Captain America: Civil War blue carpet, The Huntsman: Winter’s War red carpet and our very own Dinner Is Coming series. So it makes perfect sense for the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia (Disney) to tap into this demand.
In a joint press release on Thursday (April 13), STB and Disney announced a three-year deal to bring Disney-themed events to Singapore. There will be a range of “exciting experiential activities” starting with Star Wars, followed by Marvel and Disney Animation/Disney Pixar themes in 2018 and 2019 respectively. According to Disney managing director MD Rob Gilby, it’s the first such collaboration with a national tourism body in Southeast Asia.
It all kicks off with STAR WARS DAY: MAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU Festival, a three-day Star Wars festival (May 4-6) at Gardens by the Bay. The highlight of the festival is SaberTrees, where the iconic Supertrees will be transformed into lightsabers. There’ll also be the first-ever Star Wars Run, as well as a Star Wars-themed Silent Disco and an outdoor movie screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The festival will be followed by other Star Wars-themed events in the second half of 2017. STB chief executive Lionel Yeo says that the events will profile attractions and precincts in Singapore. Hopefully, this all means many more movies being filmed in Singapore and more celebs visiting us.
Or what chance a Star Wars Celebration event in Singapore? Hmmmmmm.
