Yes, you read that right: David Tennant, a.k.a the 10th Doctor Who, is becoming a part of the Marvel TV universe!

The Broadchurch (2013 – ?) and Gracepoint (2014) star will take on the role of the villainous Kilgrave in the Jessica Jones TV show. And according to Marvel:

“An enigmatic figure from Jessica’s past, Kilgrave’s reappearance will send shockwaves through the former super hero’s world.”

If you’re familiar with the comics, you’ll realise that Kilgrave is none other than Zebediah Killgrave a.k.a. the Purple Man. Usually a villain in Daredevil’s world, he’s a nasty little so-and-so who specialises in mind control.

Hopefully, Tennant won’t have to bathe himself in purple paint. As it is, executive producer/showrunner Melissa Rosenberg is confident that Tennant will make Kilgrave a “truly original villain.” Jeph Loeb, executive producer/Marvel’s Head of Television, also praised him for his “incredible level of dedication”.

While I fear for the multiverse (you can’t have an actor playing two geek roles in two worlds!), it’s yet another coup for Marvel. Not only is Tennant a fine actor, he’ll get the Whovians (and there are LOTS of them) watching too.

Marvel also seem to have developed a fetish for British actors, what with Benedict Cumberbatch and (apparently) Chiwetel Ejiofor being cast in Doctor Strange.

Here’s the Jessica Jones synopsis again: “After a tragic ending to her short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.”

The 13-episode Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones will premiere on Netflix this year, after Marvel’s Daredevil comes out on April 10.
