Fresh from laying waste to the Earth, Godzilla director Gareth Edwards has been tapped to direct one of the Star Wars spinoff films

In a statement on the official Star Wars website, Disney and Lucasfilm said the movie would be released on December 16, 2016, but gave no information on which character the movie would feature. Edwards also said:

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm.”

Due to the high level of secrecy surrounding the new Star Wars movies, it is unclear which spinoff Edwards will tackle. Speculation has focused on characters such as bounty hunter Boba Fett and Jedi master Yoda. There are also rumors of a potential Han Solo origin story, and untold adventures of Luke Skywalker.

Earlier in May, Disney CEO Bob Iger said there were plans to make at least three spinoff movies that would be released in between the main installments. Star Wars: Episode VII, with J.J. Abrams directing, has just begun production in Abu Dhabi. The film is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2015, and is giving fans – though not in Singapore – a chance to be an extra in the movie.
