I think we fanboys can all agree that Hugh Jackman has been THE definitive Wolverine. If you don’t buy it, just try and imagine Russell Crowe and Dougray Scott – the two actors initially up for the role – as Wolverine. Finished shuddering? Good, now don’t blaspheme again.
Jokes aside, Hugh Jackman may not play Wolverine for much longer, if his recent comments are to be believed. In an interview with Vulture at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, Jackman said that next summer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past may well be his last appearance as the X-man with the berserker fury:
“It’s nearing the end. I do feel that. If there are any more movies, there would have to be a really good reason for it. I can tell you this, and I can say this now: I wasn’t sure that I would do another Wolverine movie after the first one. I just felt that I hadn’t done the character justice, and that was a bit of a hole inside of me.”
Despite the rubbish that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and this year’s definitely-better-but-still-kinda-boring The Wolverine (check out our grumpy geek Bryan Huang’s review of The Wolverine here, and Geek of Steel Lai Hanwei’s summary of the first Wolverine movie here), Jackman is still very much beloved.
But just like with Superman and Batman, the role will eventually be filled by multiple actors. I’m pretty sure Jackman will play Wolverine again, especially since The Wolverine cleaned up at the box-office. His comments could also simply be posturing to secure a better deal for himself.
But now might be a good time to think about the succession, and which actors could potentially play Wolverine. I’m going to go out on a limb and say: Josh Brolin?? After all, he won’t be playing a certain Dark Knight, so he might be free for the next few years…
