Well, well. Are we about to have our very first female Robin in a movie??
Citing “multiple sources”, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Jena Malone a.k.a. Johanna Mason of The Hunger Games has been cast in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. What they’re not so sure about is who she’ll play – and the rumour mill has been going into overdrive.
Word has it that Malone will be playing the other half of the Dynamic Duo: Robin, presumably Carrie Kelley of Frank Miller’s groundbreaking 1986 comic The Dark Knight Returns.
Malone was first connected to the film following a Thursday report by central Michigan NBC affiliate WILX, who had been following the film’s shooting in the area. Quoting an anonymous extra from the movie, the station reported that Malone had been spotted on set, and that the script allegedly included a female Robin.
Two weeks ago, Malone also posted this photo on Instagram of her recently dyed-red hair, adding to speculation that she may be playing Kelley (also a redhead).
Malone previously worked with Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder, in Sucker Punch (2011). She’s now best known for her role in The Hunger Games franchise, and will also be in the upcoming The Hunger Games; Mockingjay – Part I.
It’s early days yet, so I’m quite wary at the moment. Even if Malone is playing Robin, it could just amount to a glorified cameo. And if they go the Gotham route (Oh look, a young female cat burglar! A creepy young girl called Ivy Pepper!), then all nuance and characterisation could be thrown out the window.
Nevertheless, it is an exciting development (if true), and Jena Malone is a more than decent performer. Let’s hope she’s allowed to do the role justice. More female superheroes, please!
