Rian Johnson may have directed The Last Jedi, but it looks like it’s just the beginning of a longer career in the Star Wars universe.
Lucasfilm announced on Thursday (November 9) that Johnson will be working on a new trilogy of Star Wars movies, the first of which he is set to both write and direct.
According to a statement released by Lucasfilm, the new trilogy is “separate from the episodic Skywalker saga” and will “introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored”. These are the only solid details unveiled so far.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said via the statement that they loved working with Johnson on The Last Jedi so naturally they’d trust him with the task.
She enthused: “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
We have yet to see The Last Jedi, which opens in cinemas here on December 14, but the latest trailer released last month was mind-blowing and we hope it’ll bring the saga to new heights.
Plus, Johnson is a singular talent who has given us tight contemporary genre films such as Looper and Brick. So it’ll be interesting to see where he’ll take the Star Wars franchise next.
These new movies are on top of the Star Wars anthology movies that are already in production (Solo: A Star Wars Story and Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi standalones). So this is welcome news for fans who’ve been wondering what’ll happen after Episode IX is done and dusted.
