Disney recently released several official images from Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to the studio’s hit 1964 movie musical that starred Julie Andrews. Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive. These images are stirring some precious memories of a bygone era and it really does feel like we’re returning to the magical world of Mary Poppins.
The chameleonic Emily Blunt will be playing our beloved magical nanny this time and she looks practically perfect in every way on the cover of EW’s latest issue above.
It looks like a part of the action will return to the rooftops of London. Jack the lamplighter (Lin-Manuel Miranda, extreme left) and Mary Poppins (Blunt, extreme right) lead the three Banks children – Annabel, Georgie and John – through the streets of London in the big musical number Trip a Little Light Fantastic.
The sequel is set 25 years after the events of the previous movie. The original Banks children, Jane and Micheal, are all grown up and played by Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw respectively.
Jack and his band of lamplighters light the way to Cherry Tree Lane for Mary and the Banks children.
The EW images included some concept art. The image on the left is the re-imagined Cherry Tree Lane where the Banks family lives, the one on the right portrays the abandoned park favoured by Jack and his lamplighters.
It is reminiscent of the park Mary Poppins and her chimney sweep friend Bert took Jane and Michael to in the 1964 classic. Bert, played by the OG Dick Van Dyke, will in fact be making a cameo appearance! According to director Rob Marshall, Van Dyke was on set just one day before EW’s set visit to film the cameo.
Van Dyke told Marshall that the thing he remembers most about working on the original film is the spirit. Marshall then shared that it’s the same spirit on this new set and when Dyke stood on the sunny cobblestones of Cherry Tree Lane, he said, “I feel like I’m home.”
Hopefully, the new cast and crew will do it justice.
