UPDATE: Production of Equals reportedly starts on August 4 in Japan and Singapore, though there’s no word on when exactly the stars are coming here. Here’s the report, courtesy of @vanessaisha.
It’s almost like Hollywood is belatedly discovering Singapore. Agent 47 is now filming in Singapore with Zachary Quinto and Rupert Friend, and Twilight star Nikki Reed is also headed here to film a horror movie with director Kelvin Tong. Now, it appears that Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart are on their way to our humid little island to shoot a movie too, and in just three months time.
The scoop comes courtesy of local geek @DauntlessCakes, who spotted the news on Screen Daily. The website reported that Hoult and Stewart, two of the hottest young stars in Hollywood, will play the leads in the sci-fi thriller Equals, a romantic adaptation of George Orwell’s classic 1984. And it’ll make its debut at Cannes, no less.
What, another dystopian futuristic film?, I hear you say. But the report adds that, come August, Hoult and Stewart will be filming the movie in Japan and Singapore. Which is wonderful news, other than the fact that the producers were making a movie about a totalitarian society, and immediately thought of Singapore. Here’s the full synopsis, which sounds suspiciously similar to a YA franchise:
Equals tells the story of Silas (Hoult) who lives in a future society called The Collective. The inhabitants of this modern world are a new breed of humans called Equals. Equals are peaceful, calm, fair, and polite and life in The Collective is perfect; there is no greed, no poverty, no violence, and no emotion. But a new disease is threatening everyone: SOS, or Switched-On-Syndrome, is activating in its victims everything they thought they’d escaped: depression, sensitivity, fear, love but once a person is overtaken with SOS, they are sent away to The Den, and never seen again. When Silas is infected, he becomes an outcast, but he notices one person who seems to understand what he’s going through. Nia (Stewart) has feelings, but she seems to be able to hide them. When he confronts her, they discover a connection that quickly takes over everything. They feel love and intimacy for the first time in their lives but the only way for them to insure their survival is to escape.
Commercially, it makes a lot of sense to pair Hoult and Stewart in the Equals movie. Hoult is a big part of the X-Men franchise, while teens the world over are still mooning over Stewart’s Bella in Twilight. But one can only hope that the forthcoming love story bears as little resemblance to Twilight as possible. David Garrett is CEO of Mister Smith Entertainment, which has acquired the international distribution rights to the film:
“With such a paucity of strong material in the market place, reading Equals was like a breath of fresh air… And the decision to shoot this in Japan and Singapore is going to give this a truly original style and voice.”
Personally, I’d love to see Hoult in Singapore, and really hope it materialises. To more movies and stars coming our way!
