Despite the quality of the original movie, it’s been a somewhat bumpy road for the Pacific Rim sequel. It’s relatively poor domestic performance notwithstanding, its global box office receipts (particularly those in China) were what prompted Legendary Entertainment to greenlight a sequel.
Then it lost its original director Guillermo Del Toro, to be replaced by former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight. But the sequel is now going full steam ahead, judging by this Instagram post from star John Boyega.
In case your memory needs refreshing, Pacific Rim was the story of humanity’s last stand against kaiju, or monsters, who came to Earth through an undersea breach called the Rift. Large-scale robots called Jaegers, piloted by humans, were built to combat the kaiju.
Boyega will play the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), who – spoiler alert! – died in the first movie. He’ll be joined by Scott Eastwood and Chinese actress Jing Tian, who’s also appearing in Kong: Skull Island and The Great Wall.
Pacific Rim: Maelstrom is set for release on Feb 23, 2018.
