We all know Roland Emmerich loves destroying cities. He’s destroyed them in the first Independence Day, in Godzilla, in The Day After Tomorrow, in 2012 and of course Independence Day: Resurgence.
But what you may not know is how much Emmerich wanted to destroy Singapore.
In an interview with Yahoo Singapore, Emmerich said he had also wanted to include Taiwan’s Taipei 101 in the movie as part of Asia’s sacrificial offering to the returning aliens.
Someone probably told him he needed to reign back his destruction a wee bit, so Emmerich ended up having to choose between the two (instead of destroying them and I’m guessing most of the Pacific Rim with it).
As we all know, Singapore was the lucky one.
“When the idea was born to have an Asian city getting sucked up, which has to stand in for Asia, I kind of said: ‘What about Singapore?’””
And just how did the director of mass destruction get the idea of blowing up our fair city anyway?
Well, it seems like he got the idea while doing a press junket for the movie White House Down a few years ago when he went up to Marina Bay Sands.
Thanks again, Jaimie Foxx and Channing Tatum sorta buddy-cop movie.
Independence Day: Resurgence opens in theatres on June 23.
