UPDATE: This is Idris Elba’s response to the #SonyHack stories about him being the next Bond.
Isn't 007 supposed to handsome? Glad you think I've got a shot! Happy New year people. pic.twitter.com/3g9lAl2Uo3

Now, this is a verrrrry interesting development. The online chatter around Idris Elba as the next James Bond has been going on for years – but thanks to the Sony hack, we now know for sure that Sony has actually considered the Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom (2013) and Pacific Rim (2013) star as 007.
The smoking gun comes in the form of a January 4 email between Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chairman Amy Pascal and Elizabeth Cantillon, a former executive for Columbia Pictures, which distributes the 007 movies. It said simply this:
“Idris should be the next Bond.”
While Elba has expressed interest in the role in the past, this is the first official indication that Sony has the actor in its sights – notwithstanding the fact that the email was sent almost a year ago. Other actors may have since superseded him.
What of the current 007 Daniel Craig then? He’s still under contract for one more Bond movie after the upcoming Spectre, which began shooting this month. It’s unclear if Craig’s contract will be extended, but it doesn’t sound like he’s eager to do so in this 2012 Rolling Stone interview:
“I’ve been trying to get out of this from the very moment I got into it. But they won’t let me go, and I’ve agreed to do a couple more, but let’s see how this one does, because business is business and if the shit goes down, I’ve got a contract that somebody will happily wipe their ass with.”
Considering how unceremoniously Craig’s predecessor Pierce Brosnan was jettisoned after four Bond movies, it’s little surprise that Craig would have such sentiments.
Nevertheless, Elba would make a FABULOUS Bond. Besides beside being an excellent actor, it’s about damn time we saw a non-WASP Bond.
What do you think, geeks – should Idris Elba be the next James Bond? Tell us your thoughts!
