It’s a tribute to the cultural impact of the show that the news was announced by the U.S. ambassador to Spain, no less: key scenes in Game of Thrones season 5 will be shot in Spain.
Ambassador James Costos – a former Vice President of HBO – confirmed that Spain will stand in for the Red Viper’s homeland of Dorne. Specifically, The Alcázar of Seville (above) will serve as the Water Gardens of Dorne, where the late Prince Oberyn Martell’s (Pedro Pascal) older brother, Prince Doran, spends much of his time.
The Alcázar is a Moorish-built castle dating back to the 1300s, so it’s certainly ideal for a GOT locale. It’s also likely that Spain will host the filming of scenes in Sunspear, the seat of House Martell. So get ready to a) meet those lovely Sand Snakes in Andalucia and b) witness a flood of tourists to Spain.
Game of Thrones season 5 premieres in spring 2015.
