Is there such a thing as zombie fatigue? After five seasons of watching Rick and co traipse round and round Georgia in The Walking Dead, we now have a chance to watch another group of survivors go round in circles – and this time in Los Angeles.
While The Walking Dead spinoff has been in the works for a while, the new series has now gotten a huge boost even before it starts: A two-season initial pick up from AMC, similar to what Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul got.
The first season of the new show will have six episodes and likely lead in to the sixth season of TWD. Season 2 will air in 2016. Both its title and the exact number of episodes have yet to be determined.
As previously reported, The Walking Dead spinoff will revolve around a family and focus on new characters. It stars Cliff Curtis, Kim Dickens, Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey.
Charlie Collier, AMC president, had this to say about the new series:
“We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the number one show on television. From the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did ‘turn.’ Through this new series, we’re going to find out. We respectfully follow the request of Monty Python as we bring out (the latest of) our Dead.”
Let’s hope the new series manages to avoid the production troubles that the original incurred – former TWD showrunner Frank Darabont is still in the midst of suing AMC, and the show itself is now on its third showrunner. Though none of that has stopped it from becoming phenomenally popular.
The Walking Dead‘s companion series premieres later this year.
