I can only imagine the screams that broke out when this video was screened at Star Wars Celebration, which is currently taking place in London. It takes us behind the scenes of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, helmed by Godzilla director Gareth Edwards.
The early buzz when the first trailers were released was that it had the look and feel of a war movie, and this featurette confirms that vibe, despite reports of reshoots to make Rogue One fit in with the tone of previous Star Wars movies.
Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly has also dropped a load of Rogue One photos for us to obsessively pore over and dissect, not to mention tantalising details of the story. First, let’s meet our players:
Jyn Erso and Cassian Endor
Or Rogue One’s Leia and Han, if you like. It’s personal for Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), since her scientist father Galen (Mads Mikkelsen) is being sought by the Empire as well as the Rebels for his knowledge. Meanwhile, Cassian Endor (Diego Luna) is the calm and collected Rebel captain. “He’s an intelligence officer and he’s got quite a bit of combat experience,” says producer Kennedy. Will the duo end up together?
Daredevil warrior is, surprise surprise, not a Jedi. Instead, the blind Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) is described as an everyman who does have faith in the Force. An everyman who can beat up Stormtroopers with just a staff.
Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) is a cynical, battle hardened soldier who’s in the fight out of devotion to his friend Chirrut. According to Kennedy, “He understands Chirrut’s spiritual centeredness, but he doesn’t necessarily support it. He supports what his friend deeply believes, but he’s much more of a pragmatic soldier.”
Director Orson Krennic
Now, this is interesting: Our first Star Wars villain with a civil service-like title. Just who is Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), and what is his agenda? We do know that he serves Darth Vader, and has a whole squad of Deathtroopers to carry out his will and protect him – especially from his Imperial comrades.
The first character to cross over from the Star Wars animations into the live-action movies, Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) is a freedom fighter whose use of brutal tactics unsettles the Rebellion.
Hot shot pilot Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) is skillful but impulsive. “He flies a lot of cargo, one of his key jobs. And he tends to be a little tense, a little volatile, but everybody in the group really relies on his technical skills,” says Kennedy.
According to director Edwards, K2S0 (Alan Tudyk) the security droid is “the antithesis of C-3PO.” As Edwards says. “He doesn’t give a shit about what you think. He doesn’t fully check himself before he says things and does things. He just speaks the truth.”
Here’s the rest of the images EW dropped, with shots of a beach battle, the sinister new black-masked Deathtroopers and a…helicopter?
The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Singapore release date has been set for Dec 15.
