Another 2.5 hours of Superman sighing, frowning and looking pensively into the distance, before getting his ass kicked from here to Krypton? Hell yeah, sign me right up, Zack Snyder!
So most of you will have seen the so, so grim Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (see our review) already, as well as its not-so-shocking conclusion. Given that particular story line, what are the odds of another solo Superman movie? Henry Cavill, the current incumbent, weighed in during a recent interview:
“I do believe it depends upon the success of this movie. If this goes well, then we can start negotiating with Warner Bros. to develop a standalone Superman, but they’ve got their plans set out for other stuff and Justice Leagues and various other movies, so it’s about finding the time really. It’s something I’d be very keen to do.”
So it’s not happening then.
Producer Charles Roven put the final nail in the coffin when he added: “We’re in the process of looking at that, but we don’t have it on the schedule at the moment because we’re quite busy with the movies we have scheduled.”
Just look at Warner’s superhero movie schedule: There are at least 10 movies scheduled from now till 2020, including Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League. Guess which character isn’t in that list? Which is such a pity, given that, in Snyder’s words, Superman is the grand daddy of superheroes.
In any case, given the largely negative response to BvS, Warners may want to rethink its approach to the DCCU before it adds more movies to its slate. If there is another Superman movie – and it’s only a matter of time – it’d be awesome if he didn’t frown so much.
