First it was Nicholas Hoult, a.k.a Beast, who announced that the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse was going to be his last X-Men movie.
Now it looks like fellow castmate and former paramour (Head Geek Nic Yong: They belong together, DAMMIT!!)) Jennifer Lawrence is calling it quits on this franchise too.
Lawrence, who has already shot her way into the hearts of countless fans as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games movies, told MTV News that Apocalypse was the last X-Men movie she was signed up for.
Our own Head Geek Nicholas Yong speculated that money might’ve been a factor in the negotiations for Hoult, but I’m not so sure about Lawrence.
She’s already proven that she can carry the weight of an entire franchise on her shoulders, and her recent forays into more conventional fare like American Hustle (2013) and Serena (2014) may indicate that she’s ready to branch out into something different.
Not to mention that it looks like Fox is thinking more in terms of trilogies than a movie universe along the lines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (sigh), and X-Men: Apocalypse is a nice way to tie things up for a prequel story arc that began in X-Men: First Class (2011).
Of course, this might just pave the way for a new wave of mutants to shine. Who knows, somewhere along the way we might just see Sansa Stark go all Dark Phoenix on us.
Just PLEASE don’t tell me they’re going to replace James McAvoy (Charles Xavier) and Michael Fassbender (Magneto). Now, that would be an outrage.
X-Men: Apocalypse will start filming next month, and is due in cinemas on May 27 2016.
