While filming on X-Men: Dark Phoenix is ongoing in Montreal, Canada, it appears that the cosmic saga we know and love from the comics may be more Earth-bound than we thought. X-Men franchise veteran and director Simon Kinberg says his goal is to make the movie “grounded”.
In a recent interview with Total Film, Kinberg alludes to the “human…and emotional” nature of the X-Men films. With regard to Dark Phoenix, he therefore wants to “find a way to ground it so it’s not too intergalactic.”
It’s unclear if he means that the movie will be more emotionally grounded or if less of the story will take place in the cosmos. To refresh your memory, much of the “Dark Phoenix” saga takes place in outer space, with the Phoenix-possessed Jean Grey literally destroying planets and the alien Shi’ar race .
To invoke a more painful memory: Fox has already chanced its arm with a Phoenix subplot in X-Men: The Last Stand, and we all know how that went. But with Jessica Chastain signed up to play the Shi’ar queen Lilandra, here’s hoping the movie stays true to the epic storyline of the comics.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be released November 2, 2018
