“My name is Barry Allen. And I’m the fastest man alive”
Words to send a chill down the spine of any DC fan, and we now have a proper look at Grant Gustin as Barry Allen a.k.a. The Flash. The CW has released an extended trailer for The Flash TV series.
Barry gets a darker, Batman-like origin story, which is as predictable as it is tried and tested (Reverse Flash killed Barry’s mom, y’all! And he was bullied as a kid too!). But it does stay true to the chemistry lab accident that gives him his powers. Barry also remains a socially awkward police scientist (a CSI these days?), though his obsession with solving his mother’s murder alienates many around him.
Fortunately, he has Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh), a Professor X-like mentor figure complete with wheelchair, to help him out. Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) is also there to dispense sage advice. And of course, TV journalist Iris West (Candice Patton) is there to capture his heart.
The superspeed SFX look very pleasing, and straight out of the comics. Gustin fits the costume well, but doesn’t look as muscle-bound as his predecessor John Wesley Shipp. Shipp starred in The Flash (1990-91) and will have a role in the new series:
It looks like his first villain is the Weather Wizard (Chad Rook), thankfully shorn of his silly costume from the comics, though with a different first name. While Marvel’s cinematic universe is conquering one and all, it appears that DC’s TV projects are well and good.
