From the director of John Wick and the upcoming Deadpool sequel, David Leitch brings us what looks like yet another kickass action film with his signature filming style.
Set in Berlin on the eve of the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, MI6 spy Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is tasked to bring down an espionage ring that has killed an undercover agent. Teamed up with Berlin station chief David Percival (James McAvoy), Broughton is forced to dig into her bag of tricks to prevent the West’s intelligence operation from being compromised.
Based on Antony Johnson’s graphic novel The Coldest City, the film also stars John Goodman, Sofia Boutella and good old Toby Jones. (It really wouldn’t be a proper spy film without Toby Jones playing a senior intelligence agent.)
They’ve also released a couple of stills from the movie:
From the looks of the red band trailer, Atomic Blonde will feature Theron’s action skills front and centre as she battles hordes of enemy agents at every turn. I mean, just look at that staircase sequence!
I’m also looking forward to Theron and McAvoy forming an unlikely but hilarious alliance. It’s been some time since McAvoy’s had to flex his muscles in an action sequence, especially since he reprised his role as the young Professor Xavier in the X-Men films twice in the past three years. But if you’ve watched him in Filth (2013) and Split (see our review), you’ll know that he’s capable of so much more than just putting his fingers against his temple.
