If you’re not done binge watching Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage or er, Iron Fist (see our review) yet, you better do it soon, because The Defenders are coming.
Yes, the less flashy, more grassroots version of The Avengers are finally getting together after each of their members were introduced in their own Netflix series. This structure mirrors what Marvel Studios did with the members of the Avengers, but after the disappointment of Iron Fist, I’m not expecting them to pull out a masterpiece like 2012’s The Avengers.
Instead of Captain America and Thor antagonising each other, we’ve got Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Danny Rand (Finn Jones) being all suspicious of each other. And instead of shawarma, we’ve got the Defenders shooting the breeze in a Chinese restaurant.
That said, I still got a chill down my spine seeing Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) in the same scene together. And just as we expected, it’s Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), who has appeared in all of the Marvel Netflix series so far, that brings the Defenders together.
Netflix and Marvel have also brought out the big guns for the series. That is, they’ve ponied up the money for the rights to use Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” in the trailer, and I gotta say, it works. If that’s the sort of tone they’re aiming for with The Defenders, then colour me intrigued.
Also? Someone’s baaaaack!
The Defenders is set to be released globally on Netflix on 18 August.
