If you’ve ever wondered what a Black Widow standalone movie might look like, just check out the Red Sparrow trailer.
Based on the bestseller by American author Jason Matthews, the movie sees Jennifer Lawrence playing Dominika Egorova, a Russian ballerina recruited into a secret spy programme after suffering a career-ending injury.
There, Egorova endures a perverse and sadistic training process where exceptional young candidates like her are taught to use their minds and bodies as weapons.
Egorova’s first mission is Nathaniel Nash (Joel Edgerton), a first-tour CIA agent who is handling the agency’s most sensitive Russian intelligence. The two officers, trained in their respective spy schools, collide in a charged atmosphere of secret operations, deception and forbidden attraction.
Lawrence reunites with Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence who is helming this film. The film also boasts a cast of international thespians that includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeremy Irons, Charlotte Rampling and Joely Richardson.
In a post-MCU movie landscape, one can’t help but get a sense that the classical dance background, the ultra-secret and brutal spy training as well as the clash with American operatives are elements you can also find in Black Widow’s origin story – which we’ve seen snippets of in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
But what makes this film even more interesting is that Jason Matthews is himself a retired officer of the CIA’s Operations Directorate. And Red Sparrow is known to have incorporated his insider knowledge of espionage and counter-espionage. We can’t wait to see how this translates visually onto the big screen!
And with the enduring popularity of female-led spy thrillers like La Femme Nikita and, more recently, Atomic Blonde, it’s clear that movie audiences are hankering for more. Plus, the director also revealed to the press that this is Lawrence’s raunchiest role to date. Yeowch!
Red Sparrow is slated for a March 2018 release. Are you excited about this red, hot spy thriller? Tell us!
