Millenials may not be familiar with her, but back in the early 1990s, American figure skater Tonya Harding was a big name in winter sports. Then in 1994, the unthinkable happened: she conspired with several others to attack her main competitor Nancy Kerrigan, and have her leg broken.
Now, Margot Robbie takes on the role of Harding in I, Tonya, which has been making waves on the festival circuit. It’s only 50 seconds or so, but the I, Tonya trailer has got lashings of black humour, rage and a real scary-mary vibe. “There’s no such thing as truth. I mean, it’s bullshit,” spits out Harding.
Margot Robbie looks ferocious in this brief glimpse of the movie, while Alison Janney has also received praise for playing Tonya’s abusive mother LaVona Harding. Although one does fear that Robbie, as talented an actress as she is, is being typecast as the crazy lady, after her standout performance in Suicide Squad.
The cast includes Sebastian Stan, sporting a magnificent mustache, as Harding’s ex-husband and co-conspirator Jeff Gilooly – which means the Winter Soldier was married to Harley Quinn.
Let’s let that image sink in for a moment.
I, Tonya comes out in the US on December 8.
