The first trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past is out, and this is what it all amounts to: there’s going to be a SHITLOAD of mutants in the movie.
Essentially the same footage as what we were shown at Comic Con back in July, it’s clear that this is a time travel yarn, with all its attendant paradoxes and contradictions. And unlike in the comics, where Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) was sent back in time to change the future, it’s Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) who gets to do the history meddling, aided and abetted by Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart).
We get tantalising glimpses of all our favourite mutants – Storm (Halle Berry), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Iceman (Shawn Ashmore), newcomer Bishop (Omar Sy) and our villain of the piece – Bolivar Trask.
There’s also the young Magneto (Michael Fassbender) descending to earth like a god, and dragging Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) along the ground towards him with a mere gesture, before we come to the money shot: an embittered young Xavier, face to face with his future self. “I don’t want your suffering. I don’t want your future!”, the younger Professor X rages.
It ends with the gentle tones of the older Xavier: “Please. We need you to hope again.”
